Post-industry Brownfield Recovery Platform

A responsive website platform can establish a professional bridge between environmental experts, researchers, and designers.

My Role

This project is my academic thesis at RISD and I spend one semester on research and analysis for this topic as a researcher. I also try to create a bridge between designers and researchers, which can help them easily understand and use this research. Thus, the role of the web UX designer is beneficial to establish interactions between different users and experts.

OVERVIEW

Usually, after many experts or researchers have gone through a long period of professional research, not many people are able to understand the field they are working on and how to use the results of their research. How to create an interactive platform where people can understand why experts go to do this research and how to apply their research is the main purpose of my project.

In this project, I used my postgraduate research “Post-industry Brownfield recovery system” as the background of my project. Through the responsive website design, I aim to make my research understandable and usable for more people and to deliver beneficial research results.

Problem

Solution

This responsive website is not only to introduce the background of this research and make people understand it but also to integrate the research into a new system to assist users to be able to use it better. As a result, a smarter navigation and search system will make it more user-friendly to access.

Research Background

This project is focused on brownfield remediation in the post-industrial period, based on the Allegheny region, with big data analysis and computation as a research method for landscape strategies and techniques.

Design Approach & Timeline & Milestone

While this project is divided into two parts, the process and methods are different. But it is the goal of the website to establish effective connections and to deliver effective and useful information in a logical way. Meanwhile strictly managing the time to advance the project and setting goals is also an efficient workflow system to check the progress and quality of the project.

Understanding the Researcher

This platform is to communicate between the researcher and the user, therefore how understanding what effect the researcher wants this research to bring, to be able to deliver the quickest and most effective research results.

Research Background

After the second industrial revolution, the pollution caused by industrial development caused various negative impacts on the environment, such as the Rust Belt in the United States. Therefore, this project aims to summarize scientific analysis methods and provide valuable solutions and technical methods to help remediate the environment through research on post-industrial pollution control and the environment.

Research Goal

  • Establishing a new methodology for big data analysis

  • Collecting case studies

  • Collecting and developing technologies

  • Using data analysis system and getting outcomes

Research Outcome

  • Datadriven Classification

  • Diverse case studies

  • Strategies & Technologies

  • Practice Sample ( Allegheny Region )

Researcher Challenge

  • The complexity of the research process is not easy to understand

  • The research results are required differently for different professionals.

  • A simple and basic model for obtaining research results - Everywhere

  • Deeply practice to test this research system - Allegheny Region

Other Info Collaborations

  • GIS Analysis Mapping

  • Digital Prototyping

Research Workflow

Understanding a researcher's overall workflow can positively affect the design of the website's information architecture, information types, and interactive methods.

Who are the users?

Urban Planner

Landscape Architect

Landuse Governor

Observation and Interviews

User Research

Observing and participating in the design of projects for this type of problem for a long time, and also interviewing some relevant target users, it was the most important key point to understanding their pain points and needs to build this project. Not all research results need to be used, and reorganizing information and features to meet user needs was the most important goal.

User Persona

SYSTEM BUILD

This phase of designing the platform, organizing the framework of the research, and translating it into interactive functions that can be used by the users, is the biggest challenge of this project. At the same time, the interview research phase, how to make the platform into a continuous improvement and growth is what the users are looking forward to. Therefore, some functions for uploading and sharing data will be added.

Information Architecture

User Flow & Functional Prototype

Based on the functional development done in the research, we need to understand and use the methodology in the research and then design a logical User flow. This will not only guide the users to use the research content quickly and productively but also push the information that they need quickly. If the user can upload GIS data, it can generate several Mapping analyses.

  • Only showing data location without analyzing

  • Showing multiple data and analyzing the relationship

  • Deep analysis(Research methodology) - Showing land value

  • Data System User Flow

If the user does not have the relevant data analysis of GIS, the user can also get solutions other than Mapping. According to the research filtering system, the user interaction flow is designed to guide the user to the appropriate solutions.
